One of only a few books on the subject written by a native-born Filipino author, Arnis Self-Defense offers a twofold, interrelated focus. It first looks at the unique Filipino culture — how it was greatly influenced by Spanish colonization, the oppression it suffered under foreign rule, and how the desire for freedom led to the development of the martial art of arnis. The book then presents the distinct technical aspects of this indigenous fighting art. Centering on the Kombatan method forged by Grandmaster Ernesto Presas Sr., it describes numerous maneuvers utilizing stick, blade, and empty-hand components and details their myriad practical applications. A wealth of photographs and drawings clearly illustrate the principles and techniques described. The author depicts arnis in its true light, as a simple, pragmatic method of self-defense, while debunking the more fanciful theories surrounding it as it surges in popularity.

A sinawali is a 'weaving' of strikes together to teach different patterns of motion. Strikes made by the right and left hand alternate, and the angles of attack are varied as the drill proceeds. In its basic form, the pattern of motion is agreed upon by the students before starting, but as the students become more advanced, and as one student (usually the more experienced) takes on the 'driver' role, the pattern can be changed as during the practice session.

As Sensei Carl mentions in the video below (starting at timestamp 6:10 - 6 minutes, 10 seconds), the patterns are fairly standard and consist of three strikes repeated: high, high, high; low, low, low; high, low, high; low, high, low; X-pattern; with the hands alternating, usually starting with the right hand by mutual agreement.

Any sinawali that is done with sticks can also be done with open-handed (no weapons). And this is where Arnis and Kenpo meet as Kenpo stresses defense without weapons. Strikes become blocks and blocks become strikes.

Sinawali Sequences

The next phase of development is to join a sinawali (with weapons) to the block, check, counter drill or as it is known in other disciplines as 'trapping hands' or in its more freestyle form, 'chi sao'. One student acts as the driver, delivering a strike, and the passenger applies a block (strike) to the weapon hand/arm, a check to the weapon, and then follows with a strike to the driver, who responds with their own block (strike) to the weapon hand/arm, a check to the weapon, and then a return strike at the passenger, and so on.

The driver, as the passenger's skills, improves, may introduce other weaving patterns to allow the student to explore trapping hands over all of the 10 angles of attack. The diversity of the drill is limited only to the imagination of the driver and the willingness of the passenger.
