If you remember the original time management games of old, then you would remember Diner Dash. Well, Cooking Dash is like that, except you’re now the Gordon Ramsay of the kitchen, which should give you a hint of the chaos that can happen in this game. But don’t yell at your avatar just yet. Here are some tips to really conquer Cooking Dash.

Trends

The Dash Mini Waffle Maker is a tiny, much-needed addition to your kitchen.

Eggo waffles are a nostalgic treat and a freezer staple for those who crave waffles on busy weekend mornings. But when you’ve got a little more time to invest in breakfast, and still want some serious Eggo vibes (for a Stranger Things marathon, perhaps?), heat up the Dash Mini Waffle Maker.

I was immediately drawn to the Dash Mini because I’m a sucker for anything adorable (and compared to other waffle irons, this one’s super cheap — it’s only $20!). Many kitchen devices are described as miniature, but this product is truly tiny — like fit-into-your-cutlery-drawer small. But besides the obvious cute factor and the price point I wanted to see if it actually worked.

Dash

The Test Kitchen team jumped on board to help put the Dash Mini through its paces. We compared it to a conventional waffle maker by tackling five different recipes on both devices simultaneously. We modified each one to use only one egg, as is recommended in the Dash manual. (You can do the same at home by halving the recipes below.):

  • Grilled Cheese
  • Fried egg

Ultimate waffles

After halving the recipe, we ended up with two cups of batter, which made eight round waffles (the Dash can hold about ¼ cup of batter at a time). It took between three to four minutes — about the same time as a regular iron — for each waffle to cook through and turn a beautiful golden colour

Hash brown waffles

These crispy hash browns got nice and crispy in eight minutes, or half the amount of time as the conventional waffle iron — score!

These Are The 10 One-Use Kitchen Gadgets You Actually Need

Birthday cake waffles

Like with the ultimate waffle recipe, these sprinkle-studded waffles cooked up to a gorgeous golden brown in about four minutes and were especially delicious sandwiched between layers of fresh whipped cream.

Grilled cheese waffles

We wanted to see if this little guy was more than a one trick pony. On the first go, we tried making a sandwich with two ultimate waffles, but they wouldn’t fit. So, our tester sliced a waffle in half crosswise, piled on two tablespoons of grated sharp cheddar and stuck it in the Dash. After two minutes, we had a perfect grilled cheese with a great pull, but not too much ooze.

Fried egg

For our final test, food editor Irene Ngo wanted to go totally out of the box to see if the Dash could make perfectly round eggs for breakfast sandwiches or burgers. The answer? Yes! Use only one egg at a time and keep the waffle maker open if you want your egg sunny-side-up. While you can make eggs in a conventional iron, they won’t be as delightfully round as in the Dash.

The verdict on the Dash Mini Waffle Maker

The small, but mighty Dash stood up well to the conventional waffle iron. It heated up in about five minutes and its non-stick surface made the cooking process a breeze. While you can’t remove the metal waffle plates, it’s easy to clean with a damp cloth.

While its size is a boon for those with small spaces, this feature comes with one major drawback; it might take a while to make an entire batch of waffles (about 30 minutes for Chatelaine’s Ultimate Waffle recipe).

But the Dash Mini can still be your best friend. If you’re super hungry (and impatient), whip up your batter, make a few waffles and then once you’re done eating, cook up the rest of it and freeze your leftovers — hello DIY Eggos for the rest of the week!

Dash Egg Cooker Parts

#1 Are the plastic parts BPA free?

All the plastic parts in the Dash egg cooker are BPA free and the heater surface is stainless steel so everything is quite safe to heat up.

#2 Are the parts dishwasher safe?

Obviously the base is electrical and can’t be put in water in any way. A non scratch scrubby is great for cleaning the heating plate and if there are stubborn water stains add a little white vinegar and leave for 5 minutes, this will then wipe clean and take the stains with it. According to the manufacturers instructions the removable parts are NOT dishwasher safe and need to be hand washed in hot soapy water.

#3 What’s the advantage of an egg cooker compared to a boiling pot of water?

The advantage of a Dash Egg Cooker is really the ability to cook your eggs to the same level of hardness every time, whether you want soft, medium or hard once you know your water requirement you will get consistent results. You don’t have to sit over the unit while it is cooking or wait for the water to boil, just add your eggs, the right level of water and switch on. It’s easy and no fuss and as easy to clean up as washing a pan. When you steam your eggs they seem to be easier to peel too, so that is another advantage.

Egg cooking

#4 Does this cook large eggs?

The Dash egg cooker is actually calibrated for large eggs so the timings based on the water levels suggested on the measuring cup are based on large eggs. You will need to add more water if you use larger eggs and less if you go for medium or small eggs.

#5 Do the eggs need to be room temperature when inserted in the cooker?

Dash

There is no special requirement to have the eggs at room temperature unless that is how you normally store them, they will cook just as well with eggs straight from the fridge.

#6 Do I need to prick the eggs and is there a pin included?

If you want to boil your eggs, no matter how soft or hard you will need to prick your eggs before cooking them. The reason for that is so that your egg will cook correctly and won’t crack the egg shell. There is a pin attached to the base of the measuring cup, it has a cover to put over it so you don’t hurt yourself accidentally.

#7 Are the eggs easy to peel once cooked?

You will find your eggs much easier to peel when they have been steamed in this cooker than when you boil them in a pan of water. This could be because air from the steam permeates the egg shell making it easier to peel.

Dash Egg Cooker Measuring Cup

#8 Are there more marks on the measuring cup for less than 6 eggs?

No there are only marks on the cup for soft, medium or large eggs. It doesn’t matter whether you cook 1 egg or 6 eggs just use the same measure on the cup.

#9 Can anyone tell me the measurements of the different levels for water?</h4

If you have lost of broken your Dash Egg Cooker measuring cup you can use these measures of water to cook your eggs.

Soft boiled is 25g/ml of water

medium boiled is 35g/ml of water

hard boiled is 60g/ml of water

Poaching and Omelettes

Cooking Dash Instructions

#10 How long does it take to poach an egg?

This is obviously dependent on how well cooked you like your poached eggs, for myself I like to follow the medium egg line which works well for me and that takes approximately about 7 minutes. You may need to adjust to suit yourself.

#11 Is the poaching tray easy to clean?

This tray is just made of plastic and the eggs will stick a little bit, if you spray the tray with a little oil then add your eggs you will have a lot less bother and very little egg left behind. Its very easy to wash up either way.

#12 How do I make scrambled eggs with this?

You can’t make scrambled eggs as you would normally think of them in this Dash Rapid Egg Cooker, you have to beat or scramble the egg before you add it to the poaching or omelette tray and you get more of a frittata consistency cooked egg.

#13 How good does it cook omelettes?

You can make your omelette without fat or just a little non fat spray and add any type of cooked veg or meats to it. You use the omelette tray which can hold 2 eggs plus your add ins. It’s good for a small omelette for 1 person. You will just have to find the right water level for your needs but I would start off with hard boiled level and adjust from there.

#14 Can it cook egg whites?

You can do an egg white omelette in your egg cooker, you can make small single ones in the poacher tray or a larger one in the omelette tray and you can add any cooked vegetables or cheese etc as above. I would add your add ins into the tray and pour on the egg whites to fill around them.

Final Thoughts

If you like eggs but can’t be bothered with the fuss of boiling water and managing the time of cooking the eggs without forgetting about them, this Dash Rapid Egg Cooker is a no brainer. We will quite happily use this to boil eggs at home because of the quick setup and whether we just want 2 eggs or 4 it doesn’t change the process, except you have a couple of more eggs to prick before cooking. This a small appliance which is approximately 6 inches in diameter so only the size of a small pan and easy to store.
