Having been classmates at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, frontman Sam Endicott and keyboardist soon began performing in local bars. Upon graduation the pair moved to New York City and found guitarist Michael Zakarin and bassist Mike Hindert through advertising in a local paper. Drummer Anthony Burulcich later joined after graduating from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. The Bravery made their debut live performance at the Stinger Club in Brookyn, which they promoted with posters plastered across Manhattan and Brooklyn as well as demo tape featuring the tracks “An Honest Mistake”, “No Brakes”, and “Public Service Announcement”.
The band subsequently earned residency at the Lower East Side club Arlene’s Grocery, where the group played a series of sold-out shows. The single “Alter Ego” later received significant airplay on San Francisco’s Live 105 and the UK’s BBC Radio 1, after which The Bravery signed with Island Def Jam in 2004. Later in 2004 the group moved to London, England and took up residency in the Soho club The Metro Club, after which the band embarked on a European tour, opening for the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Razorlight.
The Bravery’s self-titled debut album arrived in 2005 earning strong reviews from the critical press, aided by the singles “An Honest Mistake”, “Fearless”, and “Unconditional”. The album also proved popular with listeners as the album peaked at No.18 on the Billboard 200, and No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart. In support of the release The Bravery played a host of shows across the world including a support slot opening for Duran Duran and U2, Glastonbury Festival, SXSW, and Lallapalooza.
The full-length “The Sun and the Moon” followed in 2007 led by the single “Time Won’t Let Me Go”. Taking a step back from the synth-heavy sound of its predecessor, the album earned mixed reviews despite the No. 4 US Modern Rock single “Believe”. Two years later The Bravery’s third full-length album appeared with production from notable Santigold and Shakira producer John Hill. The album received a warm response from the critical press and spawned the singles “Slow Poison” and “I Am Your Skin”.
